Signs with escape route names

Unforeseen incidents sometimes happen in public facilities with high footfall such as department stores, cinemas or business centers. So that visitors can find an exit, escape routes and emergency exits should be marked in all buildings. Companies and companies should also equip their premises with escape route signs that comply with ASR A1.3 (2013), DIN ISO 3864, DIN EN ISO 7010 and ISO 16069.

These escape route signs are made of aluminum, plastic or self-adhesive film. The possible sizes for all of these materials are 297 x 148 mm or 400 x 200 mm; the size 594 x 297 mm is only available in aluminum. Each sign version is photoluminescent, the luminance is 160 mcd/m².

Attaching the escape route signs

In order to attach the escape route sign made of self-adhesive film, the protective layer should be removed from the back and the sign glued to the desired location. It is recommended to stick the foil signs on prepared and smooth surfaces.

The signs made of plastic can either be drilled and then screwed or, depending on the surface, secured with nails. The aluminium signs can also be drilled and then screwed. Please note that no fastening set for these materials is included in the scope of delivery.

Which directional arrow for which escape route direction?

It is very important that the directional arrows clearly indicate the escape route and can be used to quickly find the exit in an emergency. In 2017, requirements for graphic symbols and the meaning of escape route signs in combination with a directional arrow were redefined. The current standards were supplemented and DIN SPEC 4844-4 was created according to the procedural rules of a technical report. The supplement includes, among other things, recommendations for standard-compliant attachment, correct assignment with escape signs and the use of directional information. Below are recommendations for marking the direction of travel and when changing floors.

Recommendation for marking the running direction

Directional arrow to the left – go left.
Directional arrow to the right – go right.
Directional arrow pointing up – go straight ahead, possibly through a door.
Directional arrow left upwards – cross the free area diagonally to the left.
Directional arrow right upwards – cross the free area diagonally to the right.

Recommendation for marking when changing floors

Directional arrow up – go upwards.
Directional arrow down – go downwards.
Directional arrow left up - go up to the left.
Directional arrow right up – go up to the right.
Directional arrow left downwards – go downwards to the left.
